Water hygiene for spas and hot tubs

Remember that it is your responsibility to ensure that the water used in a hot tub is clean and safe.

  1. Personal hygiene and effective disinfection are two critera that are important for clean bathing water.

  2. The type of water used must also be taken into account. For example, lake water and sea water can contain bacteria and algae.

  3. Bacteria thrive well in warm water, it's safest to add bactericides before bathing. This effectively prevents the emergence of bacteria.

  4. Once bacteria have developed, a much bigger effort is required to neutralize them. There are different brands of chemicals but what is important is to use products designed for the "right" temperature.

  5. Products for swimming pools are not suitable for warm water and vice versa.

NOTE! If you do not have a filtration system we recommend that the water is not used more than once. It is still not dangerous to bathe in the same water several times if the appropriate amount of chlorine is used, but after a bath the water may not look so clean.

Good personal hygiene before taking a bath

Keep in mind that a person who has not washed him/herself before will pollute the water 200 times more than somebody who has taken a shower. Sun lotion, skincare products, soap should not get into the water and that's why we suggest to take a quick shower before enjoying a bath.

Bathing in a traditional hot tub is a great pleasure, even if it requires some work with planning and heating. Unfortunately, many people forget that bacteria also can be found in "clean" water, or arise there and they especially like bathing temperatures. An effective and easy way to provide protection from bacteria is to use the right type of spa chemicals, for example chlorine.

Cleaning the hot tub

After using the water in a hot tub it is drained out. SpaDealers hot tubs have a drainage system in the lower pipe, where also the water from the gas-burning heater is drained. The hot tub is then rinsed with clean fresh water. If the water has been in the hot tub for a long time, the hot tub must be scrubbed with pine soap for example. Remember also to clean under the benches. If you have a wood-burning heater from SpaDealers, it must always be drained.

VARNING! - In case you still don't use chemicals in conjunction with filtration then the water should be renewed often. The best is to empty the tub after each use and to rinse it thoroughly. Should you leave the water in the tub in order to keep it leak-proof then it can lead to an accumulation of bacteria. A hot tub made of ordinary material doesn't dry the in the same way as heat- treated wood does. That is one reason why it is neither reacting in dry nor wet weather.

Filtration

An easy way to always have clean and warm water whenever you wish, is to use our filtration system with connections which have been developed according to the "Clean water" concept. The filter is used to filter away particles and deposits and in order to obtain an effective filtration, the water is sucked both from the base and surface through the filter and is pumped back at the base on the opposite side from where the surface water is sucked in. This way all the water will pass through the filter which is very important. Ensure that the filtration system you use really does what it promises.

Effective disinfection - with a filtration system, the same water can be used for longer. It is then at least as important to also use bactericidal agents in the bathing water at the same time as bathing. Filtration only removes impurities, not bacteria.

Everyone who bathes contributes large amounts of microorganisms to the water, which are a mixture of different bacteria. These can be disease-causing but can be effectively combated with e.g. chlorine tablets. Read separate information about chemicals that come with our products!

High chlorine value (overdosage) gives off a strong smell and can also cause various damages to equipment. It can also be harmful to health. The same also applies in case of overdose of chlorine-free products. The chlorine value must not exceed 1.5 ppm (1.5 mg/l) and the pH between 7.0 - 7.4. For bromine, the value must not exceed 2.0 ppm and pH between 7.2 - 7.8. Be careful when measuring these values as it is crucial for a good result.

WARNING! Never use pool chemicals for hot tubs. Even with dispensers, it seeps out (due to leaky construction) even though the dispenser is completely closed. It often causes overdose which can cause various damages to equipment and it can also be harmful to health. Damage from chemicals is never a warranty issue!

Five easy advice for maintaining good water hygiene if you have got a filtration system.

  1. Take a shower before you get into the hot tub.

  2. Add some bactericidal solution before and after taking a bath.

  3. Control the ph-value and balance it if necessary.

  4. Oxygenate your water on a weekly basis.

  5. Clean the filter cartridge frequently and let the filtration system run sufficiently.

Ph-Value- it affects water quality. It should be around 7.2-7.6 and can be measured with a test stick. If necessary please balance the water by increasing or reducing Ph value.

Good to know! Is the water cloudy, it is always a result of bad filtration. Either the filtration periods have been too short and therefore could not filter the impurities.

Filter cartridge: The task of the filter cartridge is the removal of soil, sand, minerals, phosphate and dirt from bathing persons from the bath water.

Cleaning of the cartridge: The filter should be cleaned and rinsed with moderate water pressure such as a hand shower, in addition the cartridge also needs to be cleaned thoroughly in depth. Even if it does not look dirty, it should still be cleaned on a regular basis. Minerals and other impurities can get stuck deep in the filter lamella and that can lead to problems with the flow. It is always recommended to have an additional filter. A filter needs to pass a cleaning- and drying process while the other one gets installed. The lifespan and efficiency of the filter can be doubled through the use of thorough and regular cleaning.

GOOD TO KNOW!

The fact that the water does not become clear (cloudy or foggy water) is almost always due to poor filtration. Either for short filtering periods but more often because filter cartridges are not clean and thus cannot handle impurities.

Filter cartridges:

The task of a filter cartridge is to remove soil, sand, minerals, phosphates, secretions from bathers and other solids from the bath water.

Cleaning the filter cartridge:

In addition to washing the filter with eg. a massage shower, you also need to clean the filter cartridge "in depth". Although the filter cartridge can look clean, it still needs to be cleaned regularly. Minerals and other contaminants that are very difficult to detect can get stuck deep inside the filter's fibers, thus causing problems with the water flow. It is good to have an extra filter cartridge on hand. One filter should always go through the cleaning and drying process while the other is installed. The deep cleaning doubles the overall life and power of the filter cartridges.

Filter cleaning:

  1. Put the dirty filter in a bucket of water and add dishwasher detergent or "Filter Cleaner".

  2. Leave it in the mixture for at least 12 hours.

  3. Remove the filter and rinse it clean with eg. a water hose or massage shower both inside and out. Let it dry thoroughly. The filter should dry for at least two days before installing. Note This is important regardless of what can be recommended elsewhere.
